Unleashing the Blues: A Women's History Month Celebration You Won't Want to Miss!

North Jersey Blues Society

Women’s History Month is a special time to reflect on the achievements of women throughout history and honor their contributions across various fields. This March, get ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant celebration dedicated to the women who have influenced blues music! The North Jersey Blues Society (NJBS) presents the “NJBS Women’s History Month Celebration: Women in Blues Showcase Series” on March 8, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ.

The Heart of the Blues

Blues music is not just a genre; it’s a powerful expression of emotions that tells the stories of those who experienced hardship and joy. Women have been vital in shaping blues, from legends like Bessie Smith, often called the Empress of the Blues, to contemporary stars like Shemekia Copeland, who uses her platform to address issues of race and gender. This showcase will pay tribute to their legacy and illuminate the role of women in this dynamic genre.

With the event happening on International Women’s Day, it gains even more significance. It’s a call to celebrate women’s achievements in music and advocate for equality across all fields.

A Night of Talented Performers

One of the standout features of the NJBS Women’s History Month Celebration will be the incredible lineup of artists:

Former BC & The Blues Crew member, Mitch Shelly began his tenure with BC & The Blues Crew and remains as one of the regions s sought after bassist on electric and upright; and from Orange NJ, retired supervisor and fire fighter, Glenn Spadone, is the heartbeat of the band on drums.

Regina Bonelli

Regina Bonelli is a tour de force singer, keyboard player, and songwriter who brings blues, rock and roots together with power and sensitivity that listeners, DJs, critics, and live audiences love. With three albums of original material celebrated on U.S. and international charts, including heavy rotation on SiriusXM BB King's Bluesville station, and a reputation for blockbuster live performances, Regina is the real deal. Regina Bonelli's excellent band always delivers an authentic, gritty sound and has featured many acclaimed bluesmen including guitarists Tomas Doncker, Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton of Parliament Funkadelic fame, and Alligator recording artist Michael Hill. About all of her band members, Regina says "I feel so much joy and I'm truly blessed to work with such gifted, dedicated musicians."

Debra Devi

“Imagine you're preparing a list of today’s top female blues/rock guitarists. If you don’t include Debra Devi, your list is not complete," says American Blues Scene. Devi plays "dreamy blues-rockers and blistering jams" (Relix) flavored with her soulful voice and expressive guitar playing. She's opened for Ana Popovic, Joe Louis Walker, Joan Osborne, Jesse Malin and Marshall Crenshaw, and has performed with Kate Pierson (B-52s) and Cindy Cashdollar. Devi's popular blues glossary The Language of the Blues: From Alcorub to Zuzu (foreword by Dr. John) won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for outstanding book on music.

The Outcrops

Deep in the woods of Northern New Jersey, The Outcrops have emerged as a force to be reckoned with. This tight-knit group of musicians weaves together the soulful sounds of blues, the infectious rhythms of funk and soul, and the electrifying energy of rock'n'roll, creating a sonic experience that had them named "Band of the Year" (Aquarian, 2020).  At the core of The Outcrops are the dynamic duo of Bryan Schroeder and Cassidy Rain. Bryan, with his searing lead guitar, effortlessly weaves intricate melodies that fall somewhere between the soulful prowess of Derek Trucks and the transcendent vibes of Jerry Garcia. Cassidy brings real and raw powerhouse vocals that fans have compared to artists like Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, & Grace Potter, as well as her rhythmic guitar work that is in constant conversation with the band.
